What motivated Dr. Dexter to pursue advanced training in dental sleep medicine?
In 2005 Dr. Dexter attended a multi-discipline sleep symposium on obstructive sleep apnea and the cardiologist presenter recommended that for the attendees to understand the process, they should have a sleep study done when they return home. At the time, he had no identified risk factors other than being male, so he was shocked to find out that he was diagnosed with moderate OSA.
That led Dr. Dexter down the path of treatment with PAP, failed PAP treatment, and seeking an alternative treatment of Oral Appliance Therapy. This personal experience was his motivation to pursue training in dental sleep medicine.
